Firework Fantasia

As 2009 comes to a close, we have a lot to be thankful for.  Christy and I started Toolulu earlier this year and know we are going to see so many of our efforts pay off in 2010.  We have several items we are hard at work on and can’t wait to announce the details.  As you know, one project we’ve been working on is Awesome Camp.  It’s been great to see so many willing to support and event in Lincoln.  It’s going to be a killer event so I recommend getting your tickets ASAP before they run out!

A couple mentions we would like to make as we end this year- there’s no way we’d be where we are at with some of them. Thanks to husbands,  friends and family for believing in us and giving us the support we need.  Thanks for being understanding with the late nights and conference calls!  Thanks to Lincoln Kayak Polo for being our very first client.  It’s been fun to see your business take off and seeing participants rockin’ it out on the water!  Thanks to all of our Social Media Club friends and supporters.  We have met so many great people through this club… more than we ever imagined when we started it.  Thanks for attending events and keeping it going!

We are excited to see what 2010 will bring… we know it’s going to be great!

Happy New Year!

I’m using Twitter, now what?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

A lot of people are hopping on the Twitter bandwagon.  Some are setting up accounts and just letting them sit.  If you, or someone you know is doing this, it’s time for an intervention.  I believe Twitter is the most useful tool online right now.  It has simply made my life better not only because of the great people I’ve met and collaborated with, but it has also presented so many opportunities as well.  Twitter has changed the way we do business and has leveled the platform.  I mean, what other space can you mix and mingle with celebrities and have direct contact with Rubbermaid, Martha Stewart and Oprah?

So if you are on Twitter and are guilty of letting your account sit, here are a couple tips to get you going.

  1. Make time to update. I don’t have a set twitter schedule, but I try to hop on atleast once a day.  It’s important to keep in touch with your contacts and keep the conversation going.
  2. Make updating easy. Write about what is going on in your life.  {No, I don’t mean what you had for lunch– unless it’s interesting}.  Write about what you are experiencing.  Have you read a good book recently?  What made it so good?  Have you discovered a great news article?  Share it.  Have something funny to say?  Have at it.  Don’t think too hard about updating, just do it.
  3. Use an application like Hootsuite or Seesmic to make twitter easier to navigate.  Here’s a couple tips on making twitter work for you and making it less of a time suck and using it productively.
  4. Watch what others do. Are you still unsure how to use twitter?  See how other people are using it.  And you’ll soon be well on your way to making great contacts and opening doors.

Is There a Best Day to Use Facebook?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

If you’re using facebook as a marketing tool….yes, some days are better than others.  Vitrue did a study that shows that Tuesday has a higher click through rate than any other day.

Tuesday may have the highest click through rate, but you can see from the image that your facebook friends and fans are more likely to take a look at what you’re putting out there in the beginning of the week.

So if you’re thinking of launching a big promotion over the weekend, think again.  Tuesday and Wednesday are where it’s at.

Year End Planning

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

This is Life

Do you find yourself spread too thin as an entrepreneur?  Trying to do everything you can to find the balance of spending time finding clients, marketing yourself, and serving the clients you have under your belt can be an overwhelming task.  It’s a great time of year to analyze where you are at with your business, what you can do better, and to set goals for the new year.   Here’s a couple of items to focus on to get you started.

What is your vision statement?
Where are you headed? Where will you be in 5-10 years? Keep this statement simple, yet impactful and purpose driven.  A couple examples:  “To dominate the global food service industry.” -McDonalds,  ”We will put a man on the moon before the end of the decade.” -JFK-1961

What are you core values?
What will you go to the wall for?  Integrity, family, leadership, dedication, expertise, passion, reliable, professional are all examples.  What defines you to your core?  What are those values you will stand by no matter what?

What is your competitive advantage?
This is what makes you unique and makes people say, “wow! I want to do business with you.”  This is a key item to know, if you haven’t established this already.

Setting a couple hours of planning time aside can give you better focus and make you more productive.  It will help you know where you are headed, and will give you a focused list of priorities.  A couple weeks ago, I sat down to answer these questions for myself.  I learned a lot in the process.  I couldn’t believe how much I was doing that didn’t tie into where I wanted to be in 5-10 years.  I plan on making this a yearly routine to evaluate where I am and where I want to be.  I know where I want to be in 10 years… now I just need to do the right steps to get there!

Have you started your strategic planning for next year?  What have you learned along the way?

What Was I Saying?

Friday, December 18th, 2009

I’ve been a blogger for over 5 years now and for at least 3 of those years I blogged every single day.  I still blog almost every single day but I have a couple of different blogs I supply content for so it feels like it doesn’t really count.  I mean, I don’t blog on every single blog every single day.  So, what’s my point?

Sometimes it is hard to know what to write.

I come up with blog topics when I’m in the shower.  I think about them in the car.  I go throughout my day and find myself saying, “I should totally blog about this”.  Then I sit in front of my computer.

*blinks*

Know what I’m talking about?

Here is a list to help you (and me) out when you’ve got blogger’s block.

1.  Write a tutorial.  What’s your specialty?  Do people always ask you for your great grandma’s banana bread recipe?  Blog about it.

2. Make a list.  Lists are a great way to format random thoughts.  Many times I make lists and don’t publish them because I find that almost each item can be expanded upon for a blog post of its own.

3. How do you do things?  Do you have systems?  Do you have the best way to get snow off your car?  Is your method of scrubbing the bathroom floor innovative?  Share those things.  You’d be surprised that people like to know this stuff.

4.  Childhood dreams.  Write about your childhood dreams.  Have you met some of those lofty goals?  What changed?  Are your dreams now even better?

5.  If I Were A ___________, I’d Do It This Way.

What are you going to blog about today?

Gmail: Emails and Tasks

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Screen shot 2009-12-15 at 1.07.22 PM

My new favorite gmail feature: The task window.  I’ve been waiting for this feature forever!

I receive an average of 150 emails a day and it’s really easy to get behind if I don’t stay on top of it.  {It’s also really easy to let my email distract me too since there’s a constant flow of emails back and forth throughout the day.}  A great solution to stay on top of email: skimming.  I have emails that I receive that get my full attention.  I read every single word.  I also receive other emails {mainly press releases} that I skim and quickly glance at to see if I’m interested.  I quickly reply to emails that need a short answer.  Anything that requires action on my part, goes into my tasks.  It’s a great and wonderful feature and I couldn’t live without it!

Gmail has been great to add this feature, but I would like it to encompass a couple more things: deadlines and reminders.  When my task list gets too long, it’s easy to forget about things at the bottom of the list.  I know gmail is probably working on these improvements so for now, I will enjoy what I have and keep checking things off.

What helps keep your email organized?

Google Chrome Web Browser

Friday, December 11th, 2009

I’m a PC.  Deb’s a Mac.  It works well for us.  For a long time I’ve been a fan of Google Chrome and I’ve been sad that Deb couldn’t experience the true awesomeness of it all.  Now she can.  Google Chrome is now available on Macs.  If that wasn’t enough, they’ve gone and made the most awesome features video I’ve ever seen.  The crafty in me feels giddy about all the fun they had making this.

Are you set on your current web browser? What do you use?
