What’s your Pitch?

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Do you have an elevator pitch?  You know, the one where you try to give someone an inkling of what you do in 30 seconds.

When someone asks you what you do for a living, what do you say?

Companies Doing it Right

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

I was listening to this podcast earlier this week about local IT company, Five Nines.  I was really impressed by the way they run their business.  Here are a couple things I picked up from the podcast.

1.  They put their clients first. They are available any time of the day, 7 days a week.  And if you’ve ever had need for IT support, you know this usually isn’t the case.

Women in Technology

We spent last weekend at Big Omaha.  It was an amazing conference and we got so much out of it.  If we had one complaint, it would be that  we would love to see more inspiring women in tech!  We’ve got some suggestions for next year. Let’s see if you agree with those on our list.

Tools = Success

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Toolulu turned a year about a month ago, and it’s hard to believe how busy we are.  We are operating as a two person business {Christy & I} with hopes to grow even more in the next year.  Here are a couple tools that we couldn’t live without around here.

    1. Basecamp.  Interestingly enough, my former employer used this as a task manager and I HATED it.  I thought it was the worst thing ever.  A couple of months ago, Christy and I started seeing issues with communication breakdowns and efficiency and decided it was time for a task manager.  In our search, we tried a lot of different applications.  And nothing held a candle to Basecamp.  Turns out my former employer was using it all wrong, and wasn’t making the process as simple as it could be.   Read More

    Online & Offline Branding

    Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

    Last week, we talked about branding at the Lincoln Social Media Club.  We discussed how important it is to make sure your online and offline branding match– because whether you know it or not, you are a brand.

    We gave everyone stickers to go around and label everyone.  To label everyone with 1-2 words that describe them.

    Business Goal Setting

    Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

    We’ve got a regular column over at Craft Critique blogging about business.  While that article is written for the craft crowd, the principles apply to any business goal setting.  Why not go over and take a peek?  In addition to some business cheerleading you’ll learn whether everyone’s favorite decoupage medium is  Mod Podge or Modge Podge.

    Press Releases

    Thursday, February 4th, 2010

    Just like everything else, press releases are evolving.  I went to school for a degree in public relations about 10 years ago, I was taught to put ### at the bottom of every press release.  So 2000, right?!  Things move so fast in the world today, that it’s going to take a lot more than just 3-4 paragraphs on a page with ### at the bottom to make your press release a success. Social Media & Efficiency

    Toolbox

    {image here}

    When you think about the state of marketing or public relations, say 100 years ago– is it really that different from today?  The local blacksmith would spread the word about Bob’s new grocery store in town by telling everyone he knew about the store.  What great produce it had, and how reasonably priced it was.

    The blacksmith of today is on twitter and facebook, telling everyone about Bob’s new store– how great the produce is and how excellent the customer service is.  Social media is a tool in our tool box and shouldn’t be ignored.  We are able to reach a more targeting and widespread audience than ever before.

    Our delievery has improved.  And I think it’s going to continue to do so.  We will become more efficient and effective communicators throughout time.  Working together and collaborating in new ways that seems impossible 100 years ago.  Could you imagine having a business partner 1,000 miles away 100 years ago?  It would have been impossible to be efficient!  And now it is completely feasible.

    How has social media made you more efficient and effective?
